Hi everyone,

I have been interested in Case Study research in Education and social sciences generally for many years, but there is less focus on case study method than one might like. Apart from the well-known works by Yin and Stake and related similar works by these authors:

* Yin, R. (1984). Case study research: Design and methods (1st Ed.). Beverly Hills, CA: Sage; Yin, R. (1994). Case study research: Design and methods (2nd Ed.). Beverly Hills, CA: Sage Publications.

* Stake, R. (1995). The art of case research. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.

Are there other resources on case study that colleagues would particularly recommend?

Hi Jill,

We've just published a new 4th edition of Yin: Case Study Research, and you might also be interested in a new book from Helen Simons, Case Study Research in Practice.

Both books have sample chapters to read online - just click on the link to the book page, and then click on 'Sample chapters and materials' on the left. It would be great to hear what you think.

Thanks,
Harriet

Hi Harriet,

Thanks so much for this info. I will have a look at the sample chapters and get back to you with response. Delighted to know that Yin's 4th edition is out as this book has been a favourite of mine for 15 years, would you believe....

Best,

Jill

Hi Jill
I use Sharan B Merriam to complement Yin and Stake:
Qualitative Research and Case Study Applications in Education

And yes it is frustrating - and interesting - that there are releatively few resources on this method. I am writing up case studies at the moment, and find the actual writing process (to an academic standard) is quite challenging. I endlessly review, redraft, edit, ponder, go search for more resources, more pondering - wonder if i will ever feel the case is "complete"!! Possibly a hazard of the process - trying to both think and feel my way into the boundaries and scope of the case study is tricky.

Hi Ann,

Many thanks for your informative comment. I will check out Merriam. I do agree that there are not enough resources on case study (of course, bearing in mind the initial comment!) and that the writing process is both challenging and complex. For most studies, it takes several months to write up cases so I constantly repeat to my doctoral students the need to write, edit, reflect, get feedback, write, edit, etc. I appreciate the points you've made also re. boundaries and scope.

Best regards,
Jill

Could you please provide me more details of Sharan Merram's book, such as, year of publication, name of publisher etc? I too have been using Yin and Stake's books .

Hi Nasreen,

I think it is:

S. B. Merriam (1998) Qualitative Research and Case Study Applications in Education, San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 275 pages, (softcover).

There is also a useful review of the book at this link:

Hope that helps and let me know if not.

Hi Nasreen
I think the book by Meriam may have a different title according to which country/edition you purchase it in - I have left my copy at home, where I dont have internet access, but will check and post here IF there is info on alternative title.

Stakes book (2006) also updates you and has many many useful references to the literature on case analysis.

I dont find Meriam all that useful for multiple case analysis and am using Stake 2006 Multiple Case Analysis for my Phd cross-case study analysis. However the meriam book is good for single case studiy construction, and is written in an accessible style by an experienced case study methodologist.

Hi again

My foggy brain works sometimes, even in the wicked heat of an Australian summer drought.

There was an earleir edition of the merriam book which goes by the title "Case Study research in Edcuation" but I concur with Jill, get the recent version.

Hi Mithu,

That's an excellent article - thanks so much for posting up the reference. I'd read it before, but it is really useful to be reminded of it - for me and others here interested in Case Study.

Best regards,
Jill
