Let me introduce myself: I”m military sociologist

Dear All,

since I am new in the Methodspace, I would like to briefly present myself. I am Olga Nowaczyk. I am a sociologist, and I am Polish. I work as a Assistant Professor at the Institute of Sociology (University of Wroclaw). My research interest is focused around the issue of social agency, reflexivity, subjectivity and military sociology.

In my PhD thesis (‘Military academies students in the era of transformation and integration of the Polish army and the society’), I combined quantitative and qualitative methods to describe the specific social collectivities that make up the military academy students (future professional soldiers). I was interested in two conceptual categories: the identity of students and social experience, and exactly the experience of social change. In recent years, social and political changes have led to a crisis of identity of military institutions that have lost the status of the most important and stable system of reference, and is increasingly characterized by uncertainty, risk. These transformations have a direct and indirect impact on the military education system in Poland, as well as students representing an element of the system. Acting in these situations, struggling with a strong sense of distance, strangeness and tension that it generates between competing logic action: for example, between logic and the logic of integration strategies, which make them choose between the imperative to build relationships and survival. Students are trying to somehow deal with this tension, build yourself a margin of freedom, autonomy, its own interpretation of their experiences.

I am currently preparing a theoretically and methodologically to research (Schuetze’s variant of biographical narrative interview technique) about Polish soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan (‘The experience of the war of Polish soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and their biographical implications’).

I would be interested in all discussions concerning the role and the place of theory in qualitative data analysis, the relevance of abduction in ‘generating theory from the data’, as well as the application of critical realist perspective in empirical research.

All the best wishes,

Olga
