Whether one has to handle quantitative or qualitative data, there are an increasing number of software and freeware to help you order and analyse your data. Many, like SPSS or NVivo, are available via licensing agreements for individuals or for institutions. Many others are freely available online and are produced and maintained by a community of researchers working together online to share problems and devise solutions.

Another interesting software is HIMATT (Highly Integrated Model Assessment Technology & Tools). Unfortunately whether the software is described in several papers (see, for instance, http://www.iadis.net/dl/final_uploads/200818L003.pdf), the software is not available, as far as I know.

free and open source software are applications developed by a community of programmers i.e., professional and enthusiasts that offers their products free of charge together with the source code. microsoft sells its products but keeps its source code. a source code is the instructions as well as the bloodline of any software applications... those who are interested can visit the www.gnu.org for more details or just google "free and open source software" to get thousands of available materials...
