Big Data Conference at the Oii

Hi all, thought I'd share my summary of the Big Data Conference at the Oii last week. I was really impressed with a couple of the speakers. Lance Bennett from the University of Washington gave a fascinating presentation on large scale platforms for discussion and deliberation and asked the question ‘Do people actually want to deliberate, or is twitter/facebook really as deep as they want to go?’. The jury is still out.  He says we now have a gap between the ability to produce large scale tools…See More

Quantitative Skills conference 26th March 2012

On Monday, I attended an excellent conference at the British Academy on Quantitative Skills, with a focus on international comparisons. The main question posed by the conference was, ‘How well trained are UK social science students in quantitative skills?’ The resounding answer was ‘Not very well’!

The conference examined some of the reasons for this, starting with secondary education. In a survey of 24 countries, England, Wales and Northern Ireland were the only…

Hello

Have you heard of the Social Retun on Investment work? Called SROI and if you search for that with the New Economcs Foundation material should come up.

I have expereince of using it here in Scotland and it can be very valuable indeed for 'social' organisations in some circumstances.

Katie Metzler,

....a while back you posted some information on impact of social sciences in policy.  Have you ever come across resources, organizations, authors, etc. who are accounting for the 'measures' of social science impact?

I'm currently doing an environmental scan, looking for measures of social science impact...do you have any suggested resources?

Sincerely,

Paul J Graham
