RESEARCHING BODY AND EMOTIONS
The group hereby presented aims to open the exchange and discussion on various strategies to explore and understand the connections between bodies and emotions in the processes of social structuration today. The expressiveness of the social subjects has always been a controversial issue for social sciences, because nobody can live-in-the-other. But “progress” of qualitative research strategies in social research in order to progressively and steadily incorporate the “expressive capture technologies” more and more enables to bridge the gap between what the researcher sees and the subject expresses. From the traditional recorder to the digital video camera, the attempt has been to expand the capabilities of “grasping” the social world and the voices of individuals who build it. From participant observation to the world-life representation that is made effective in the theater and dance, we see strategies for capturing information that has advanced over the expectable and indeterminable that is characteristic of the individuals in social interactions. Nurturing the experience of creativity as power to capture and transform the world, qualitative inquiry ruptures and builds renovated roads to see-the-world with others, and the others involved in the investigation. When creating, subjects inscribe in multiple surfaces the different ways in which they put forward their emotions and feelings. If creativity is used as the logic of inquiry what emerges, what “interests” the researcher to emerge and what actually does not emerge are mutually strained thus transforming into a knot through which what the researcher tried, did and what the subjects 'do' finally meet and to go through. To express is just making explicit what was already implied, is to de-wrap, de-compress. In expression in general what is tacit (what is assumed according to the mechanisms of social bearability and regulatory regimes of sensation) actually occurs, becomes present. Expressing oneself is also a vehicle to disarm the packages of class habitus, to take out what “wraps” things and put it in connection with what was “wraped”. At the same time the expressiveness of the subjects decompresses what is “tight”, and “concentrated” in the silence related to the differential and systematic appropriation of the uses of the word as the only way of speaking. From visual anthropology to visual sociology, from the ethnomusicology to popular culture studies, capturing what the subjects want to express “closer” than the verbal narrative alone, has been repeatedly aimed at. When you enter the “world” of expression in relation to qualitative inquiry of the social world, a series of questions or areas of theoretical and methodological work is widely opened. Consequently, this Group aims to become a swap space for all those who inquire into the social world eigher in, by and through the bodies and emotions.
