I would recommend you reading Lazarsfeld’s and Rosenberg’s classic, The Language of Social Research. I believe it was published on Glencoe Free Pres (though not entirely sure). The book is from the 50ies, but is has some excellent chapters on concept formation. What is more, the book is for students and has a somewhat scientific aim (the reason for the latter being that it is written before the postmodern turn in sociology).
I note that there are also other related books such as Continuities in Social Research, which is a sequal to the aforementioned.
