The edition of the book that I have uses SPSS 17, but I have 19. Generally, it’s the same. However, I’m having trouble with a step in Smart Alex’s Tasks in chapter 4. When creating a clustered bar chart, Andy uses a variable on the X-axis called ‘INDEX’ (see attached image). I have no idea how to get that to show up there. Any help on this would be appreciated—I’ve looked around a bit and tried a few different things, but I can’t get INDEX to show up there.

The “INDEX” that you are seeing is the name of one of his variables – the three little balls next to it indicate that the data are nominal.

When you first open chart builder the box will say “x-axis?” – you then drag the variable into it from the list on the left – Andy has simply dragged a variable called “INDEX”.
