It is not, in fact, a uniform phenomenon as evidence like Rod Ellis shows that no two learners learn in exactly in the same way. Hence, it may be claimed that learners show great differences while learning a foreign language due to cognitive factors such as age, aptitude, cognitive style on the one hand, and due to non-cognitive factors such as motivation, attitudes and personality on the other hand.
Individual differences in foreign language learning are understood in terms of the way learners learn the target language and the way they use their knowledge. This is, indeed, due to five general factors as suggested by Rod Ellis(2000). Three of them are cognitive which are: age, aptitude and learning style and the two remaining factors are affective namely motivation and personality to which we can add attitudes that are inseparable and very much in keeping with motivation.
