    I’d take a careful look at the table of contents (and any other materials from it you can get your hands on) to help decide if you want to make such a large investment and if so, which edition – as time has gone by, each edition has developed a more postmodern slant. Also, the handbook is usually published as well in 3 parts, allowing you to buy just one part if that is of most interest. Another option is that previous editions (or some chapters at least) are available on Sage Research Methods (Online) if you are at a university or other site that gives you access to that resource.
