Online Research: Analyze Talk

In June we are focusing on a range of qualitative and quantitative methods for collecting data online. Find the unfolding series through this link. We will build on the May focus: Finding Data in Documents and Datasets. Explore the whole 2021 series on stages of the research process: Finding the Question, Choosing Methodology and MethodsDesigning an Ethical Study, and  Collecting Data from & with Participants.

Dr. Trena Paulus broke new ground with her 2013 book, Digital Tools for Qualitative Research. In 2020 she co-authored two new books, which we featured on MethodSpace. With our June focus about online research, we'd like to highlight these two video interviews.

One book is a second edition that does a lot more than simply update Digital Tools. Doing Qualitative Research in a Digital World moves beyond digital tools to include research uses of online spaces and electronic resources. This practical book includes chapters on the literature review, managing data, and on using data analysis software. Find the post, with a video interview, here. The first two chapters of the book can be downloaded here for a preview.

The second book focuses on how to design and conduct studies of online communications and communities. In this video interview, the co-authors discussed ethical dilemmas and demonstrated approaches for this kind of online research.
